This intensive will begin with the foundations of folk waltz frame, connection, steps, and rotation. From there, we’ll learn transitions in and out of handhold and frame variations such as cuddle, cape, promenade, and hammerlock. For each connection type we explore, we’ll discover optional flourishes and how and why they work. Together we’ll step onto the floor of Flurry’s open waltz sessions with confident partner connection, musicality, and classy new waltz flourishes!

Alyssa (Lyss) Adkins is a Maine-based caller, dance/movement teacher, and fusion organizer who has been dancing all their life.  Introduced to contra by parents who met folk dancing, they also trained in ballet in their youth and quickly went on to explore hip hop and several partner dance styles including Blues, fusion, and West Coast Swing during their time living in NYC.  Lyss has taught waltz, contra dance workshops and fusion at local dances in Maine, Portland Fusion Dance!, Boston Second Sun, Motley Hue, Brooklyn Contra, NEFFA, YDW, and Pinewoods and is featured as a dance artist and contra caller in the Urban Stomp exhibit currently at the Museum of the City of New York.

Clayton Jennings has social danced for almost 20 years. Initially captivated with contra and other folk dancing traditions, he joined the UMass Ballroom Dance team, competing in collegiate dance competitions and instructing beginners in a variety of ballroom dances. He has combined these backgrounds to teach waltz at folk dance weekends (YDW, Pinewoods, NEFFA), He is also a blues dance teacher, completing the Boston Blues Instructor Training facilitated by internationally acclaimed instructor Julie Brown. Regularly traveling to blues dance weekends over the past 10 years, he continues to grow his knowledge of blues dance idioms and history of this Black dance form. He currently teaches at the local blues dances: Bluesy Tuesy, Blues Union, and the Burren Backroom.  As an instructor he values: a playful environment for skill growth, all dance roles for all bodies, and exploration to new dance horizons. Please ask him to dance!

We will teach a variety of material in Windborne’s signature 4-part arrangements, including English and American songs of social struggle, Corsican, Occitan, Lithuanian, Basque traditions, and more. Participants of all abilities will learn singing styles from a variety of countries and cultures as well as music from social movements past and present. All songs will be taught by ear, no sight reading required — just enthusiasm and willingness to try new things! This workshop is a great opportunity to connect with friends and make some new ones, learn music and improve your singing, as well as gather inspiration and energy. We will tell stories about the music and explain the characteristics and stylistic elements of the different traditions.

Far from the typical American upbringing, the members of Windborne grew up surrounded by harmony singing. At any party or dance, it was likely that someone would launch into a song, and everyone else would respond with harmonies made up on the spot. Raised in this culture and as bearers of these traditions, it was only later they realized that this was an unusual childhood. As young adults, they started to become aware of similar communities of song from different countries who shared this sense of harmony singing as a part of the social fabric, who sang different songs, in different styles and languages, but shared a similar story and sensibility.

Thus began a decades-long passion for learning directly from singing masters from cultures with traditions of harmony singing, leading to deep cultural exchange and a broadening of harmonic possibilities. This study has led them to Corsica, Basque Country, Quebec, Lithuania, Occitania, Bulgaria and beyond, deepening their understanding of the human voice and all its possibilities. Windborne is the project where these four singers blend this breadth of knowledge with the traditions they carry in their bodies, polishing and refining each note and chord to create arrangements that burst with vitality, authenticity and power.

For many years Windborne was a part-time passion project as the members of Windborne pursued separate careers, from circus artist, to dance anthropologist, to choral conductor. Through their rare tours they gained a reputation as a hidden gem of the New England music scene. That all changed in January 2017 when they shot a selfie video of a 19th century English protest song outside Trump Tower in NYC. The clip went viral with a global response, and the group was inundated with performance requests, and by the end of the year had launched into full time touring across North America and the world!

The group has been touring ever since, one of only three full-time vocal ensembles in North America, and has performed in dozens of countries across five continents, delighting crowds in venues ranging from national concert halls and cathedrals to nightclubs and caves! They have released 5 albums with 3 accompanying books, and have set crowdfunding records with their latest album as the most successful vocal album ever, as well as the 5th most-backed album of any genre across platforms. They are sought vocal educators, and regularly lead workshops, teach masterclasses, and guest lecture at institutions across the US.

Windborne believes that singing is powerful—in community, as performance, with friends, or with strangers. The point of our work isn’t simply to dazzle the audience with vocal fireworks; it’s to evoke a deep emotional response that connects the listener with people, places, and ideas.  Singing songs from movements of the past is less about historical curiosity than an acknowledgment that what we fight for today is connected to struggles of the past. When we sing music from other cultures, it isn’t as distant curiosities, but as footholds to build empathy, community, and cross-cultural understanding.

Music and art are not neutral; songs can give a voice to those who have none, and can sometimes change hearts, even when minds are made up.
